London is huge, both in area and population. If you plan on visiting the British capital you will not be at a loss to find places to stay. There are literally thousands of them. But not all of them are in convenient locations. And of the ones that are, only a small percentage are in areas that are also safe and interesting. To help you make an informed decision about where to stay in London we’ve brought together this brief guide that focuses on the best areas of London for visitors to stay in. Enjoy.
3 of the Best Areas to Stay in London
Like we said our goal here is not to endorse specific hotels or guest houses. Instead, we will be focusing on areas within the capital. We do it that way because a hotel that might have been great a year ago may not be so great now, and even great hotels are often located in dodgy or inconvenient areas. That said, let’s get started.
Covent Garden
When it comes to great areas for visitors to stay in it doesn’t get any better than Covent Garden. It is undoubtedly urban and yet it is crisscrossed by narrow streets lined with fashionable boutiques, cosy cafes, ethnic restaurants, speciality shops and more. You could be forgiven for thinking you passed out and woke up in the Latin Quarter in Paris.
There’s plenty of public transport, and best of all you’re walking distance from Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly and countless other hot spots. If a day trip outside the capital is on your agenda you’ll find Charing Cross Station just a hop, skip and jump away and Waterloo just a short taxi ride across the Thames. Like most people, however, you may decide that there’s so much to see and do in and around Covent Garden that your day trip to Kent or elsewhere can wait until next time.
Kensington
If you like the idea of being in the middle of it all Kensington is your place. Kensington is a large area of central London that changes character several times as you move from north to south or east to west. In the northeast corner is Kensington Palace at the western edge of Hyde Park, while a couple of miles to the south is the lush and cozy Bramham Garden surrounded as it is by buildings that can only be described as a fanciful hybrid of Baroque and Palladian.
To the east of Kensington is Buckingham Palace, to the north, Notting Hill, to the west you’ll find Stamford Bridge and to the south, King’s Road and ultimately the River Thames. Whether you’re in London for a weekend or a month you will find Kensington to be an ideal launch pad for all your British adventures.
Spitalfields
If you want your urban experience to have a funky edge you’ll love Spitalfields. Located just to the north of The City and a modest walk from The Tower of London this area has escaped much of the large-scale gentrification that swept across the capital during the 1990s and early 2000s and still retains some of the character of 1960s London when the British capital was the world capital of hip. You’ll find every type of accommodation here from well-known international hotel chains to spacious and affordable airbnbs and everything in between.
We would not necessarily recommend Spitalfields for families with young children simply because life here tends to be more in your face than in other areas. That’s not to say it’s dangerous, it’s not, but just to say that it may be a bit overwhelming for the kiddies.
