What is the Best Month to go to London?

What-is-the-Best-Month-to-go-to-London

London is a major destination for travellers from all over the world. Nearly 20 million people visit the UK capital every year and that number is predicted to rise by as much as 50% by the year 2030. Whether you are a history buff, an art lover or just enjoy civilisation the way it was meant to be, London must be on your list of destinations. And that, of course, raises a number of questions. Perhaps the primary among them is “What is the best month to go to London?” Let’s find out.

When is the Best Month to Visit London?

Because everyone’s tastes and everyone’s idea of fun are different there is no single answer to this question. The right month for you to come to London will depend almost entirely on what you hope to get from your visit.

For instance: if you want to admire the countless architectural wonders London has to offer, avail yourself of the myriad high-quality, plein air dining opportunities and spend a Saturday wandering through the legendary Portobello Road Market then the best time to come is during the summer when the weather is warm. June, July and August are also the driest months of the year and as such, the best for taking in the capital on foot.

If you want to experience London at its most magical and vibrant you can’t go wrong visiting anytime between late November and early January. During that time the city positively sparkles with countless holiday lights, elaborate displays and holiday festivals to warm the heart of the most stubborn Scrooge. And who knows? You may even experience one of London’s infrequent snow storms which put the finishing touches on the holiday ambience like nothing else can.

If you have a deep-seated aversion to crowds you will want to stay clear of the capital during the summer, which attracts the bulk of the city’s 20 million annual visitors. Instead, consider visiting London in the late spring, specifically April and May. During this time it is warm enough that you can leave your winter coat behind and the crowds have not yet descended. The city is also exceptionally beautiful during this time with countless flowering trees and shrubs.

If you are an art lover and plan on spending time in places like the National Gallery, the Tate and the Victoria and Albert Museum it does not matter very much when you come since you will be spending much of your time indoors revelling in the work of some of history’s most acclaimed and accomplished artists.

Finally, if you are negatively affected by long, dark days you will want to avoid London during the winter months. In the very depths of winter, the sun rises around 8 am and sets a scant 8 hours later, around 4 pm. And even at its height, the sun is never very high in the sky. On the other hand daylight in June lasts for an astonishing 18 hours +/- due to the capital’s being located so far north. So if the idea of watching the sun go down behind Big Ben at 10 pm interests you, June would be the ideal month to visit.

The Bottom Line

London has something to offer everyone including world-class museums, unmatched history, countless cultural amenities, unlimited culinary choices, top-shelf shopping, vast open-air markets and much, much more. There is also a little something to suit everyone’s taste from a weather perspective. Including short, cold days, long hot days and of course the world-famous London fog. So if you plan on visiting London simply lay out an itinerary of things you want to do, then find the month with the kind of weather that puts some starch in your stride and you’re ready to go.
