Best Places to Stay in London

Published on November 29, 2024 by Josh Hamit SEO

If you are not familiar with the British capital you will no doubt be taken aback by its size the first time you visit. London is the largest city in Western Europe and given that much of the city centre was built during the days of empire there is a very deliberate grand scale to things.

With history around every corner and some of the most impressive royal residences this side of Saint Petersburg, it’s difficult to choose the single best place to stay in London. Instead, we’re going to suggest several different spots in the capital that each make a case for being London’s best place to stay.

First Things First: Getting Around

One of the many great things about London is that it sports one of the world’s great public transport systems. There are just over 250 miles of subway line (which locals call “the Tube”) serving 272 stations, along with countless bus routes that crisscross the city.

As a result, no matter where you stay you will be able to reach the best and hottest attractions – or get to your business meeting – in a hassle-free manner. And if public transport is not your style you’re also in luck, because London boasts more than 15,000 standard taxis and nearly 90,000 private hire vehicles (Uber etc…).

Our Take on the Best Places to Stay in London

Now that we have the pleasantries out of the way let’s look at our choices for the best areas to stay in London.

The West End

What’s not to like about the West End? It features world-class shopping, outstanding restaurants of every type, and nightlife aplenty for the vampires out there, including 39 working theatres. Hotels here can get pricey given the central location and the proximity of hotspots like Piccadilly Circus and The National Gallery. And let’s not forget Buckingham Palace, which is just a hop, skip and jump down The Mall from Trafalgar Square. Many also consider the West End to be the best place for families visiting London.

Regent’s Park

Located a bit to the northwest of the West End is Regent’s Park. Named for the Prince Regent (later to become King George IV) who in the 1810s proposed turning the grounds into a pleasure garden. It was not until 1835, however, that the park was first opened to the public on a limited basis.

The area surrounding Regent’s Park is filled with stately buildings and a little farther out are the popular areas of Camden Town and Marylebone. Many notable sites are within walking distance of Regent’s Park including Oxford Street, the London Zoo, Madame Tussauds, the Sherlock Holmes Museum as well as innumerable lively bars, pubs and eateries.

While it’s undoubtedly one of the best places to stay in London, don’t expect to find discount lodgings in Regent’s Park.

The Best Area for Sightseeing:

As the name implies Southbank is on the south bank of the River Thames yet still delightfully close to major attractions including Big Ben, Parliament, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and more. For those with business interests in the capital, Southbank is also conveniently located just across the Thames from The City. As far as accommodations go, they tend to be a little less expensive in Southbank, adding further to its allure.
