Mayfair is one of the most vibrant and livable districts of central London with loads of high-end shopping, history around every corner, galleries displaying some of the world’s most important artworks, generous greenspaces where you can sit and catch your breath and gastronomical offerings to delight the most sophisticated taste buds. So the challenge wasn’t whether the team at Luxury Serviced Apartments Mayfair could find 9 things to do in Mayfair that were worth writing about, but whether we would be able to limit any list to only 9 things. It wasn’t easy but after much hand-wringing we distilled our list to the following entries. Enjoy.
The Royal Academy of Arts, or RA to the locals, is a must-see for any genuine art lover. The RA was established in 1768 and as such is one of the oldest art institutions, royal or otherwise, in the UK. The Royal Academy features the work of both emerging and established artists and is renowned for its wide-ranging Summer Exhibition. Some visit the RA just to take in the building itself. Known as Burlington House after the 1st Earl of Burlington who purchased it in 1667, the building is an English Baroque and Neo-Palladian mansion that houses not only the RA but several learned societies as well.
If you enjoy fine dining you will be glad you decided to stay in Mayfair London. The district boasts some of London’s most celebrated Michelin-starred restaurants including Alain Ducasse, Francatelli, Hakkasan, Hélène Darroze and more. The number and variety of eateries that could arguably give Michelin restaurants a run for their money is equally impressive and covers all aspects of the culinary arts. Just remember that in most of these establishments reservations are a must.
Bond Street is known throughout the world for the dizzying number of high-end shopping options. Global luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton, Dior, Chanel, Versace, Cartier and Tiffany & Co stand shoulder to shoulder waiting to greet the well-heeled shopper and to cater to their every need. From fabulous footwear to haute-couture hats and handbags to die for it’s all here on one street running through the heart of Mayfair. Even if you’re not in the market to buy, window shopping here is an experience all its own.
What do a German-British composer from the 18th century and a rock revolutionary from the 1960s have in common? They lived next door to each other – albeit 200+ years apart – on Brook Street in Mayfair. Handel composed most of his best known works at 25 Brook Street, which was his primary residence between 1723 to 1759. Hendrix occupied a flat at 23 Brook Street, right next door, in the years 1968 and 1969 during which time he turned the London music scene on its head and changed the course of popular music forever. Today you can visit the Handel & Hendrix Museum and see if you are able to take away just a bit of their inspiration.
Located in the heart of Mayfair London, Grosvenor Square is one of the capital’s most important garden squares. If you are looking for a place to retreat and relax after having your mind blown by the Handel & Hendrix Museum, Grosvenor Square is just the place to shift gears. Get off your feet for a few minutes and contemplate the host of impressive structures that surround the square or have a picnic lunch in the shadow of one of the square’s many statues.
The Wallace Collection is an often-overlooked jewel in the heart of Mayfair. It is housed in Hertford House located in Manchester Square, just a stone’s throw from Oxford Street. The museum occupies the former home of the Marquesses of Hertford and is named after Sir Richard Wallace, whose love of fine art was the driving force behind the collection. That collection features stunning examples of fine and decorative art including masterpieces by Titian, Rembrandt and Velasquez, in addition to important examples of period furniture, armor and porcelain. Best of all? Admission is free.
Unbeknownst to many the public is invited to visit both Christies and Sotheby’s free of charge to enjoy the countless examples of high-end culture on display in the weeks leading up to an auction. Whether you are an aficionado of 19th century romantic painting or 20th century collectibles you will find something to fixate on in the showrooms of these two world-renowned auction houses. If you wish you can join a guided tour and learn more about the auction house as well as the pieces on display.
Just when you think one area of London can’t possibly have more to offer you stumble upon Savile Row, home of some of the world’s most gifted and exclusive tailors. Those tailors train for years on one aspect of the suit before moving on to the next. When fully trained they produce bespoke suits that are more investment than they are clothing. How much will a bespoke suit on Savile Row set you back? Well, as they say, if you have to ask you can’t afford it. (But just between us, don’t be surprised if the bill tops £10,000.)
If shopping on Bond Street and ordering a bespoke suit on Savile Row has left you in financial shock retreat to the very down to earth Shepherd Market. Conveniently located just a few blocks from Picadilly, Shepherd Market is something of an outlier in an otherwise aggressively upscale part of the capital. The narrow lanes are lined with lively pubs, quaint shops and cozy restaurants and you will soon discover that Shepherd Market is treasured by all as a place where locals can let their hair down a bit, loosen their tie and just be themselves.
