It wasn’t easy but after much hand-wringing we distilled our list to the following entries. Enjoy.

The Royal Academy of Arts, or RA to the locals, is a must-see for any genuine art lover. The RA was established in 1768 and as such is one of the oldest art institutions, royal or otherwise, in the UK. The Royal Academy features the work of both emerging and established artists and is renowned for its wide-ranging Summer Exhibition. Some visit the RA just to take in the building itself. Known as Burlington House after the 1st Earl of Burlington who purchased it in 1667, the building is an English Baroque and Neo-Palladian mansion that houses not only the RA but several learned societies as well.

What do a German-British composer from the 18th century and a rock revolutionary from the 1960s have in common? They lived next door to each other – albeit 200+ years apart – on Brook Street in Mayfair. Handel composed most of his best known works at 25 Brook Street, which was his primary residence between 1723 to 1759. Hendrix occupied a flat at 23 Brook Street, right next door, in the years 1968 and 1969 during which time he turned the London music scene on its head and changed the course of popular music forever. Today you can visit the Handel & Hendrix Museum and see if you are able to take away just a bit of their inspiration.
